About this trip

A 4-day, 58 km traverse around Cerro Huemul, through one of the most pristine areas of Los Glaciares National Park. It starts in El Chaltén, passes lagoons, forest, ridges and zip-line crossings, reaches Paso del Viento — where the view opens onto the Southern Patagonian Icefield — and continues towards Lago Viedma and Bahía Túnel. No crampons or rope required, but it demands good fitness for the mileage and the fords.

Day by day
Day 1
We leave El Chaltén on the Loma del Pliegue Tumbado trail, with panoramic views of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. We then descend into the Río Túnel valley and follow it to Laguna Toro, where we set up our first camp.
Day 2
From Laguna Toro we cross the Río Túnel, fording it or on a zip-line depending on conditions. Then comes a 900 m climb up to Paso del Viento, followed by the descent to the refuge where we spend the night.
Day 3
We leave the refuge along the lateral moraine of the Viedma Glacier and climb to Paso Huemul, with the glacier on our right and Lago Viedma on our left. From the pass we descend to Bahía de los Témpanos, where we camp.
Day 4
The last day crosses the Patagonian steppe along the shore of Lago Viedma. We cross the mouth of the Río Túnel on foot and reach Bahía Túnel, where a 45-minute transfer takes us back to El Chaltén.
